Dublin is turning into quite the city for a good cup of joe. With a plethora of bean houses to choose from, in this day and age, your go-to coffee spot can say more about you than your Hinge prompts ever could.
Maybe you’re the type that orders a single-origin filter with a plenty of follow up questions. Or perhaps you’re one of those types that orders an extra hot, skinny latte, decaf, with an extra shot. Whichever combination allows you to get your caffeination on, there’s a coffee shop for your unique desires.
We’ve teamed up with fan favourites Oatly, who have become the staple in Dublin’s oat flat whites to create this list, for you, yes you, the reader. So, let’s break it down. Here’s what your favourite coffee shop in Dublin actually says about you.
Bear Market started its humble life from a portable coffee trolley in Blackrock Market back in 2012 to now having multiple locations across the city as well as their very own in-church roasters. Owners Ruth and Stephen were fed up with the recession and decided to do something about it by quitting their day jobs and starting one of Dublin’s most sustainable coffee brands. Their roasters is located in a former church in Stillorgan and they have a huge grá for sustainability. The beans they source from the Huila region in Columbia for their house blend are so bleedin’ organic that they are picked and sieved by hand, and processed depending on what the weather is saying at the time of picking. Not to mention, they are one of a handful of roasters in the country who use the Loring Falcon 15 roaster, which cuts down on emissions by 80%.
Brew Lab don’t mess around when it comes to java. They are the coffee professors and we are their diligent pupils. Led by coffee sweet hearts Arvind and Renata, Brewlab is their caffeinated menagerie that they finally opened after competing in countless coffee competitions for Ireland. With two different coffee stations dedicated to each espresso and filter, Brew Lab offers countless options at each bar serving up to 16 different varieties of coffees at a time. Wowza. Put that in your espresso machine and brew it.
Boland’s Mills is a historical corner of the city that has recently been rejuvenated thanks to coin from our tech overlords of the city aka Google™. It really is the least they could do. And one of the only good things that come out of tech gentrification is excellent coffee. Grindstone are absolutely nailing it with their sleek bean house down at the docks. Owners Simon Moore and Erwin Pollard started their coffee shop journey in Dundrum, but we love love love the Boland’s Mills location. We recommend having a little sit by the window with a view of the canal while you contemplate how your life turned out.
Mr. French was a concept that was born from Co-Owner Ben Mulligan’s love for Gangster Films, yet the cafe’s personality was rerouted as soon as the distinctive eclectic wallpaper was hung in the café. A swift change in colour scheme, Mr. French is now one of the prettiest cafés in the city. Not only is their coffee banging, but their iced coffee game is as strong as the pilates girlies that frequent on the weekends. They can their iced drinks in house making these puppies easy to transport while on the go.
Whether you’re a sustainability kween, a full-blown coffee nerd, or just here for the vibes and an iced oat situation, there’s genuinely something for everyone.
And if you’re still not convinced, or you fancy doing some field research yourself, you can catch Oatly (Stand B13!) as well as the city’s best cups under one roof at the Dublin Coffee Festival taking place this weekend at the RDS. We’ll see yiz there.
