A Rum Renaissance: Venezuela’s Diplomático Lands in Ireland

Words: Hannah Lemass

Good news for rum lovers! The award-winning Venezuelan sensation, Diplomático rum, has landed on Irish shores – and it’s about to warm up your winter.

Diplomático boasts a range of exquisite rums, but let’s shine the spotlight on the Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva. Its a smooth operator that’s rich and luxurious. Expect bold aromas of orange peel, toffee, and a cheeky hint of liquorice. It’s basically Christmas in a glass but not overwhelming.

Ireland is in a Rum renaissance and Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is the perfect spirit to help us reach enlightenment. As we are so cruelly plunged into the frosty embrace of the autumn and winter months what we really need is some liquid escapism. Even snuggled up in the fleecy Oodie your granny got your Christmas 5 years ago clinging to your radiator for dear life trying to absorb any vestige of heat. You can still feel like you in a tropical paradise sipping on this premium rum.

Yeah sipping rum is a thing. Now, I can already hear some of you declaring, “You can pry my rum and coke from my cold, dead hands!” But hear me out – Diplomático is a ‘sipping’ rum, sure but of course you can throw in your favourite mixer or add it to a sophisticated cocktail if you want to. But honestly this beauty deserves to be savoured. Pour it over ice with a twist of orange and let the magic happen. It drinks like a fine whiskey, so it’s just begging to charm the Irish palate.

The master blenders at Diplomático take their craft every seriously. The result is a rich a complex but silly smooth and unsurprisingly multi award winning spirit. Its really unlike any rum you’ve had before. but what makes it so special? Well, this Venezuelan wonder is born in the foothills of the Andes. The rum’s secret weapon? Locally sourced sugarcane that thrives in the hot, humid Venezuelan climate. The sugarcane is transformed into molasses, which is then used in the rum’s production. This process follows the usual steps – fermentation, distillation, and ageing. Diplomático is expertly aged in Whiskey and bourbon narreells goivn it that smooth and rich depth of flavour.

The brand’s icon Don Juancho is inspried by the Mantuanos – te venezealan noblemen of the 19th cnetraut known for their discernment and diplomacy of course. . These gents travelled far and wide, becoming local ambassadors of fine goods. In a sense they were the original smooth talkers – just like the spirit they inspired.

In the spirit of being diplomatic and unbiased, I have to invite you to try it yourself and see. You can pick up a bottle at any good off-licence, but there’s also an opportunity to try it out in style. If you’re lucky enough to be in Cork City on October 14th, head down to the Paladar X Diplomático Rum Takeover. At the iconic Paladar bar on Bridge Street, Diplomático Rum brand ambassador Aaron Mulligan will be serving a selection of spectacular Diplomático Rum cocktails from 7–9 pm. It’s an evening not to be missed!

Diplomático’s arrival in Ireland is reason to celebrate. So whether you’re going to make fancy cocktail after work, or just sip it straight raise your glass and your expectations because this Venezuelan beauty is about to make us all fall in love with rum all over again.

Salud!

Always enjoy Diplomático responsibly
