It’s the final week of Pride Month with festivities ramping up ahead of the big day on the 29th, but listen, just because the month is coming to an end doesn’t mean our support ever should.
Pride isn’t just for June, and there’s no excuse not to champion LGBTQ+ owned businesses all year round. From cosy cafés and delicious restaurants to lively bars and brilliant shops, there are so many amazing queer-run spots across Ireland that deserve a visit now and always.
In the spirit of celebrating family-run, queer-owned businesses, here are five of our favourites that you have simply got to try if you haven’t already. But remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are countless incredible people out there sharing their talents and passion and we couldn’t possibly shout them all out in one cute little list.
Married couple Peter Sztal and Frank Kavanagh tick every single box with their iconic coffee roastery and café, Cloud Picker. Here, it’s a lot more than just a cup of coffee. They truly pour passion into that cup. They are very particular about their beans and methods, making sure they craft the perfect pours with scientific precision. They also do their part to raise much-needed funds for LGBTQ+ services during Pride via merch sales.
Brother Hubbard is like an old reliable friend on the Dublin café scene. It never lets you down, whether you’re going for breakfast, brunch or lunch. You can count on them for a delicious spread of dishes with a Middle Eastern edge. The restaurant, created by partners Garrett Fitzgerald and James Boland, has grown over the years and now boasts four locations: Capel Street, Harrington Street, Ranelagh, and a smaller spot in Arnotts.
More than just a café, Outhouse is a resource for the community. It’s a cosy spot with the most wholesome and welcoming atmosphere, where everyone can feel safe and enjoy themselves. Not only do they serve a great spread of drinks, pastries, toasties, sausage rolls and more, but for every treat you buy, you’re helping support the Outhouse LGBT+ Centre which provides life-saving services to the LGBTQ+ community in Dublin with all proceeds going towards their charitable mission.
Husbands Dan Kavanagh and Dan Rivera serve delicious South American-style tapas in a beautifully converted pub. It’s no accident they ended up in this location, they lived in the apartment above, and when the pub below closed, they were faced with the choice to leave or take over the whole building. So, they did just that. Inspired by Rivera’s Chilean roots, they created a South American-style tapas bar that’s full of community spirit. It’s a welcoming place for everyone, including families and pets. And with Table 45 literally being an extension of the Dans’ home, you truly feel like family when you visit.
Anna Cabrera and Vanessa Murphy are the couple behind not one but two flabbergastingly good Spanish restaurants in Dublin. For more than a decade, Las Tapas De Lola has been known as one of the best and most romantic tapas joints around while, La Gordita offers a truly refined experience, ideal for celebrating special occasions.
