#10: Top 5 best looking things to eat in Dublin this week

Words: Emily Mullen

From eggy sambos, s’mores to laksa

The reopening of indoor hospitality on July 5th is well and truly hanging in the balance. Rumours and rumblings from a variety of sources within and without government suggest that the rising levels of the Delta coronavirus variant will push this date back into the middle of July. Businesses around the country have been placed in an unenvious situation about what to do over the next couple of days, to stock up and fill their rotas in preparation for a return to indoor drinking and dining, or not. Following a meeting with NPHET, the cabinet is due to announce its decision tomorrow. Until then, we all need to sit tight and await the decision. In the meantime, we have collected five things in Dublin that we like the look of:

Benedicts’s Salmon Bennie

Freshly opened (on June 12th) Benedicts Egg Shop is the brainchild of Kevin Powell and Brian O’Keefe from Loose Canon, the city’s foremost wine and cheese shop. Benedicts are selling eggy filled sandwiches and coffee from their spot in George’s Street Arcade. Their salmon number looks particularly delish, a healthy portion of egg, layered with breakfast sauce, cheese and healthy hunks of salmon (via Niall Sabongi’s SSI Wholesale), all served inside a brioche bun. The combination of toasted bread, soft egg and lashings of cheese and sauce, just speaks of comfort. You can find Benedicts Egg Shop in George’s Street Arcade, follow them on Instagram for more information.

Kede Borneo’s Laksa Sarawak

Before committing to a food truck or pop-up, a great way to drum up a dedicated following and trial your dishes is to sell directly to consumers over social media. Kede Borneo is one of these businesses, using Instagram and Facebook to sell their delicious looking Malaysian food direct to customers. Selling things like Karipap kentang gemuk (which is a small pie consisting of curry with chicken and potatoes in a baked pastry shell), and their laksa sarawak which looks extremely authentic. Their laksa is made up of rice vermicelli noodle soup, with shredded chicken, prawns, omelette strips and a spicy coconut base. The company takes orders over the course of the week and then delivers them over the weekend, DM Kede Borneo on Instagram for more information about ordering and deliveries.

Mister S’s Shortrib Bun

Slaving away on the open fire Mister S have been working hard on their revamped reopening menu over the past couple of weeks. With the help of “a few barrels outside,” Mister S have reopened for outdoor dining, and are serving customers up some seriously exciting food. Their smoked short rib bun looks like an excellent reimagining of a steak sandwich, thickly cut slices of their lovingly made smoke short rib, on a base of smoked grated celeriac remoulade, topped with chimichurri on a house bun. You can find Mister S and those barrels on Dublin 2’s 32 Camden Street Lower, follow them on Instagram for more information.

The Fat Fox’s S’more and Peanut Cookie

Let’s just overlook the fact that Greystones and Delgany are in Wicklow for a hot minute. Since The Fat Fox’s s’more and peanut, cookie deserves inclusion in this list. A big hunk of marshmallow sits between two perfectly formed cookies, with chocolate and peanut crumb on top. The s’more x cookie mashup looks like the perfect size to just pop into your mouth in one go. As it stands they are a limited edition in The Fat Fox and will be vanishing at the end of July. You can find The Fat Fox on the Church Road, Delgany and 1 Trafalgar Road, Rathdown Lower, Greystones, follow them on Instagram for more information.

Los Chicanos Taqueria’s Mexican Street Corn

Fresh from the US, a pretty distinct food truck has just pulled up on the streets of Dublin 8 at the weekend. Based out of turquoise metal beauty, Los Chicanos Taqueria opened on Camden Row on Saturday, June 26th. The Taqueria is serving up some pretty exciting things including their Mexican street corn, which is made up of corn sliced from the cob, fried chorizo, roasted peppers and corn crema. The team have said that the menu is inspired by “the flavours and techniques of Mexican cooking melded with the urban, funky and edgy street food truck culture of Los Angeles.” You can find Los Chicanos Taqueria at Elliot’s Cash & Carry, 10 Camden Row, Saint Kevin’s follow them on Instagram for more information.
