November 1 marks World Vegan Day, and Just Eat has plenty of delicious offerings to celebrate with.
There was once a time when following a vegan diet meant that your takeaway options were drastically restricted. However, we can thank the gods and goddesses of takeaways, as there is now an ocean of choice for the plant-based divas of Dublin to get stuck into on World Vegan Day and all year round.
Here are a few tasty morsels that we recommend if you’re looking for a meal completely free of animal products.
A lot of vegan burgers talk a big game, but few can hold their own against their meaty counterparts. But, the team at Nice Burger over in The Bernard Shaw have managed to crack the code. Their vegan burger is proof that plant-based food can truly satisfy that gnawing cheeseburger craving that afflicts us all from time to time. And that’s no easy feat. The combination of the Beyond Meat patty, vegan cheese, pickles, onion, lettuce and tomato just ticks every box.
Little Geno’s bánh mì delivers the same medley of fresh, crispy, sweet, spicy, umami goodness as a traditional bánh mì, just minus the animal products. Marinated, grilled portobello mushrooms are the star of the show, accompanied by the rich flavour bomb that is vegan XO pâté. It’s all dressed up with shredded cabbage, daikon and cucumber, a jalapeño vinaigrette and black garlic aioli, and finished with a sprig of coriander (good news for those of us born without the unfortunate soapy coriander gene). A bánh mì might just be the best sandwich in the world, so it’s a true gift that our vegan friends can partake in its greatness.
Nothing hits quite like a good ol’ pizza, and you certainly don’t have to give it up when you go plant-based. Dublin Pizza Co proves that with the Vegan Melanzana, because contrary to unrealistic pizza beauty standards, a pie doesn’t need to be cheesy to be sexy. Far from skimping on flavours, the Vegan Melanzana is adorned with lashings of tomato sauce, roasted aubergine, grilled onions, cherry tomatoes, garlic oil, rocket, toasted pine nuts and a drizzle of 12 year old Modena balsamic vinegar for good measure. With all of those sweet, tangy and savoury flavours working together in harmony, you’ll forget all about cheese.
On cold winter nights, the soul calls out for warm, comforting, spicy flavours, and Korean cuisine is the perfect fit. Bibimbap is a staple Korean meal whose name translates to ‘mixed rice’, and mixing is exactly what you want to do with this dish. Once you’ve stirred up this colourful array of kimchi, bean sprouts, mushrooms, sweetcorn, spicy sauce, tofu and rice, you’ll have a perfect combination of flavours in every mouthful. The classic comes with an egg but you can drop this to make it vegan. And while you’re at it, since we’re celebrating, go ahead and get a portion of vegan mandu on the side. There’s always room for dumplings!
A new addition to the Dublin food scene, Olive and Crust is building itself a healthy reputation as a go-to sandwich spot in the city centre. They specialise in Tuscan schiacciata sandwiches, with signature crisp, golden flatbreads absolutely stuffed to the gills with fresh, quality ingredients. Their vegan offering has a distinctly Mediterranean influence, with a generous schmear of hummus, grilled courgettes and aubergines, sun-dried tomatoes and fresh rocket. These simple but delicious ingredients, packed into that crispy bread, make for a delightfully fresh but filling sambo to put a smile on your face.
Of course, we couldn’t forget about dessert. Beanhive on Dawson Street is an icon for its famously ornate and colourful latte art alone, but it also has no shortage of vegan options. There’s a hefty menu of plant-based breakfasts and sandwiches, but we are here to talk about sweet treats. It’s not a matter of one sad little vegan cupcake squished into the corner of a display case. This is a glorious selection of decadent muffins as big as your fist, in all sorts of flavours. We’re talking lemon raspberry, peanut butter banana, walnut caramel and more. May we suggest getting one of each and having a little vegan muffin buffet right in your living room?
