Whether you were tearing it up at All Together Now or relaxing on the sofa with mates while glued to the Olympics, we’re all struggling today with a post-Bank Holiday comedown. Some of us may still be nursing hangovers or feeling lethargic after three nights of interrupted, soggy sleep in a tent. Perhaps you’re just bummed to be back to reality. The Tuesday after a long weekend is never easy, and we could all use a little help to get back on track.
You might have your own remedies — a brisk walk, an icy sea swim, or a bit of hair of the dog — but here at Char, we believe in the healing power of a good meal. There’s nothing like a nutrient-dense, carb-loaded feast to get back in the groove for the work week. We’ve put together a list of five places that can help cure what ails you. Just remember to drink plenty of water and maybe take a Berocca.
If you were at All Together Now, your diet over the last few days probably hasn’t included much in the way of fruit or vegetables. Granola bars and chips from a van might keep you going for a long night of partying, but your liver and internal organs are crying out for some vitamins. When you’re hungover, sometimes all you want is something cold to soothe a splitting headache. An açai bowl is not only nutrient-dense, but it also provides hydration and antioxidants. The natural sugars and carbohydrates give you the energy boost you need to feel human again. If you’re craving something savoury, the range of tapioca-stuffed crepes or hearty bowls of meat and veg offers a salty kick without the greasy mess. Its filling, healing food that’s actually good for you.
We’re all guilty of not eating enough at festivals. It’s hard to bring substantial food in, and while food trucks often offer decent, even fantastic options, they can be too pricey to visit frequently over the weekend. When you’re feeling a bit underfed, sometimes only a big burger, a side of fries, and a crisp soft drink will do. Dash is the obvious choice because, when you’re hungover, the saucier and cheesier the burger, the happier you’ll be. And Dash sure do be serving saucy, cheesy, beefy masterpieces. The protein from the burger will help revive those tired, achy muscles from sleeping on uneven ground and dancing all weekend.
A sandwich is great hangover food because it’s so darn efficient. Sometimes the only energy we can muster is lifting a roll to our mouth and back down again. A sandwich can deliver all your protein and veggie needs in one convenient package. We’re spoiled for choice here, with a delectable chicken filet rolls available at almost every deli counter in town, but the GOAT of deli sandwiches has to be Mrs. Reid’s on Kevin Street. The Beef Brisket is a saucy, savoury revelation that will have you feeling not only back to normal but BETTER than normal. It’s like a comforting hug, an encouraging pat on the back, reminding you to keep your head up and carry on. Plus, it’s a sandwich, a sensible lunch, so you won’t feel like you’ve overindulged.
Any pizza is a good choice after a heavy weekend, but Coke Lane is a personal favourite. These light, soft, chewy, and flavourful pies are the perfect comfort food. The delicate smoky char on the crust provides a gorgeous contrast to the sweet tomato sauce, and the toppings are all thoughtfully curated and delicious. Try the Magnum PI if you’re a fan of pineapple on pizza. You can get Coke Lane Pizza at Lucky’s or The Circular. Both locations are bars so they offer the option of some hair of the dog, which adds to the appeal. The Circular, in particular, is an ideal spot if you’re feeling delicate, with cozy booths where you can melt away and have some well-earned rest, ready to reenter society as a functioning human being.
There are many contenders for the best spice bag in the city, but Xi’an always delivers. When you need the comforting embrace of a spicy, massive bag of goodness, this is the place to go. While I’d prefer a bit more veg, the distinct Sichuan spin on the bags here is as unique as it is satisfying. The eyeopening punch of the peppercorn will perk you up at the first much. It’s an invigorating flavour profile you won’t find just anywhere. Don’t overlook the other offerings here, either; a big bowl of hearty noodles or crisp, sticky, honey chilli chicken can also help you shake off the grogginess and feel revitalised. When you’re truly running on empty, the sheer size of the portions here will set you on the path to recovery.
