Zero waste startup BiaSol launches Super Milled Grains

Family-run start-up BiaSol has launched its first product using spent brewing grains – Super Milled Grains.

Super Milled Grains was developed over the last eighteen months with the support of Enterprise Ireland. As a result, BiaSol recently became certified as Ireland’s first official member of the Upcycled Food Association.

A tablespoon of Super Milled Grains provides ten per cent of the recommended daily fibre intake. Super Milled Grains are also entirely vegan, high in protein, and contain prebiotic fibres, B vitamins, calcium, zinc, and iron. They can be added to a wide variety of dishes, including soups, sauces and baking to a bowl of porridge or smoothie. The grain enhances recipes with malty and nutty flavours.

BiaSol is a zero-waste brand set up by sustainably-focused sibling entrepreneurs Niamh and Ruairi Dooley in July 2020.

Encouraged by the rapid growth of craft brewing across Ireland, they launched BiaSol. The company focuses on repurposing brewers’ spent grain and using it to create a range of zero waste products. Spent grain is a by-product of the industry, accounting for 85% of all brewing waste.

Each week they collect up to four tonnes of wet spent grains from four different local craft breweries – St. Mels (Longford), Dead Centre Brewing (Athlone), Bru Brewery (Trim), and Ballykilcavan (Stradbally) – which they then dry, mill and pack in their Tullamore base.

Commenting on the launch, Niamh Dooley said: “It is fascinating to see our vision coming to life. We want to make sustainable choices easy and accessible to consumers whilst ensuring our products have a high nutritional value.”

BiaSol’s Super Milled Grains are available to purchase online. Professional chefs and bakers can order larger quantities directly from BiaSol and through nationwide distributors, La Rousse Foods.
