Ulysses 2.2 announces St Patrick’s Day weekend installations and performances

Words: Eva O’Beirne

2022 is the 100-year-anniversary of James Joyce’s Ulysses. To celebrate, Ulysess 2.2 has invited 18 different artists to interpret a chapter of the iconic novel.

Curated, presented and produced by ANU, Landmark Productions and the Museum of Modern Literature, Ulysses 2.2 will display three “episodes” of their ambitious year-long project over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Episode 13 or Nausicaa, will take place Saturday 19 March in Dublin’s Museum of Modern Literature (MoLI). Taking form in the shape of a live gig, it will be hosted by God Knows. Known for his
vividly honest lyricism and electrifying energy, he will use Joyce’s Nausicaa episode of Ulysses
as a jumping-off point for an unmissable live gig, exploring sexual identity, sexual taboo and
voyeurism.

This intimate live gig will be held in the Riverrun Room at MoLI on Saturday 19 March at 21:00. Tickets, priced €15, are available now. Click here for more information.

Based on chapter nine, Seas Between is a collaboration by composers and performers Matthew Nolan and Adrian Crowley. The episode sees the duo set off on a quest of discovery through the Scylla and
Charibdis episode of Ulysses. Come and experience music as it’s made, hear how it shapes and shifts, and get a glimpse of how work is generated between two outstanding musicians.

This open rehearsal of Seas Between will take place throughout the day in the Old Physics Theatre in MoLI on Sunday 20 March from 10:30 to 18:00 on a drop-in basis. Audience members are free to come and go within that time. Included in general admission is tickets to the museum, priced at 10 euro and are available here.

Back by popular demand for a limited extended run, the wandering i is a mind-bending, interactive audio-visual experience, curated by Anne Enright. Based on chapter one, the installation uses cutting-edge eye-
tracking software and responsive soundscape to show your unique reading of Ulysses.

Read the short section of Ulysses and your unique reading will be played back to you, exactly as your eyes tracked it. On the experience, Anne commented: “Ulysses is what you make of it. the wandering i is a celebration of the process of reading, of the way we make sense of the words on the page.”

“I wanted to hand the book back to the individual readers, whose many interpretations make Ulysses a living thing.’”

The first run of the wandering i was completely booked out and tickets for this limited run
are expected to sell quickly. the wandering i will take place in the James Joyce Classroom from 15-20 March. Tickets are available here.

This project is supported and presented as part of St. Patrick’s Festival and commissioned by ANU, Landmark Productions & MoLI as part of Ulysses 2.2. Ulysses 2.2 is funded by an Open Call award from The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
