Hello, and welcome to CHAR’s food news round-up.

First, the headlines: You can now cosplay as a guest on Hot Ones on Back Page. Micro-bakery Russell Street has just opened up beside Croke Park. South Paw announced its imminent closure on Instagram this morning, shocking almost everyone. CHQ looks set to be flipping into a destination food market.

Dynamic duo Jordan Bailey and Majken Bech-Bailey will leave their positions at Aimsir, owned by the Cliff hospitality group, which says it is aiming for a third star. According to their vaguely cryptic Instagram announcement, they will be staying in Ireland for a new project they hope to announce soon.

Me Auld Flower announced it will feature a daily Onion Eating Challenge as part of its four-day celebration of Irish foods over the Paddy’s Day bank holiday. Challengers will be required to eat four onions raw, building up from a spring onion to a whole yellow onion. Move over, Hot Ones there is a new tear-jerker coming to town.

Blasta Books are doing a fundraiser for the Turkey Earthquake appeal.

The fundraiser, which takes the form of a raffle this Friday, March 3 hopes to raise much-needed funds for families who urgently need relief items and shelter. We are doing a raffle to fundraise for UNHCR’s work in Turkey and Syria. For each ten euro ticket at this link, you will be in with a chance to win multiple prises. The more tickets you buy, the more chances you have and the more money they can raise.

There’s a Skin Contact Wine Tasting with Neighbourhood Wine & Vakh Abdaladze at Hen’s Teeth this Thursday, March 2.

The event invites guests to get to know all aspects of orange wine, from sparkling and funky to defined and serious, with eight varieties available to try on the night. The event will cover the full spectrum of what happens when white grapes hit the skins during fermentation. Expect wines from Gut Oggau, Costadila, Baia’s and more.

Vakh Abdaladze is a prop for both Leinster and the Georgian national rugby squads. He started Taste of Georgia with his pal John Clarke in 2021 to bring some of their favourite wines to Ireland, with some great Amber wines on their portfolio. Shane Murphy is co-owner of Neighbourhood wine and has been in the trade for over twenty years.

Perch Coffee Hosts a New Guest Espresso

Dublin 18’s latest banger, Perch Coffee, has added another top-notch coffee to its rotating list of caffeinated beans. The  Sumo Coffee Roasters’ collaboration with Rwandan cooperative Garshu Coffee is available now. It’s described as a “lovely espresso” which comes from an all-women cooperative looking to make women’s contribution to Rwandan society count.
