Gerry’s on Montague Street is closing down

Words: Emily Mullen

The Dublin institution is shutting its doors for the last time

One of Dublin oldest Coffee shops, Gerry’s on Dublin 2’s Montague Street is closing down, after 39 years of trading. The cafe announced the news of its closure over Facebook on July 18, writing, “after thirty-nine years of feeding everybody from locals to tourists, politicians to guards, celebrities to hungover students, office staff to builders and everybody in the middle, it is sadly time for Gerry’s Café to close our shutters and say goodbye.”

“It has been a privilege to have been supported by the community over the years, and we can’t thank you enough for keeping our doors open through it all.”

Frequenters to Gerry’s will have been well aware of the portion sizes, which the statement made a nod to, “Gerry’s prided itself on the quality of our food, service, and value. We also were not shy about our portions and hoped that we kept you all full and fed on every visit.”

“A special thank you to some of our loyal customers that have been visiting since we first opened and sometimes even managed to sneak into our family dinner on Christmas Day…with no charge, but still had to sit where they were told.”

The statement reads that Gerry will still have a presence around the area and will be supporting the local businesses on Camden Street “most weekends until closing unless there’s a lock-in.”

Describing themselves as one of Dublin oldest Coffee shops/restaurants, the family run business focused on “great value home made food. Breakfast served all day with daily lunch and dinner specials.”

Local band Tandem Felix were one of the first to publically issue their support for Gerry’s tweeting, “Gerry’s on Montague St. is closing down. Genuinely the best full Irish in the world that I would always bring visitors to. Thanks for the memories Gerry you absolute legend!”

Elsewhere on District: Dublin 8 just got a whole lot greener since Greenville deli opened up
