Cost of Living Coalition announce protest on September 24

Words: Ellen Kenny

Participants will meet at Parnell Square for a pre-Budget 2023 protest surrounding the soaring cost of living.

The Cost of Living Coalition have announced they will be staging their second protest against inflation on September 24 with a number of politicians and representatives involved.

Protestors will meet at 14:30 at Parnell Square and march through the Garden of Remembrance to object to the rising cost of living before Budget 2023 is announced.

“Inflation is rising but so are we,” a Tweet from the Coalition reads.

Budget 2023 will be announced on September 27. The latest reports suggest that a once-off financial package of close to 3 billion euros could be announced to help households struggling with the inflation crisis. This is expected to be three credits for electricity bills, a fuel allowance, and a double payment of the State pension, weekly Social Protection payments and child benefit.

Cost of Living Coalition

The Cost of Living Coalition was formed in May 2022 and is made up of students, activists, unions and politicians. They are calling on the Government to take more proactive measures to help citizens with rising inflation.

They previously held demonstrations in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Sligo in May. Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald and People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett were among the speakers at the previous protest.

The Coalition recently held a protest in Cork. According to reports, 2,000 to 3,000 protestors attended the demonstration.

The past few months have seen a soaring rise in the cost of living. Electric Ireland has announced that average electricity and gas prices will increase by 37.20 euros and 42.99 euros respectively from October 1. Price hikes are set to impact about 1.1 million electricity customers.
