Celebrate 30 years of the IFI with a selection of free screenings and events

Words: Ciarán Howley

The Irish Film Institute celebrates thirty years of film exhibition and preservation in Ireland this September with a series of free screenings, behind-the-scenes tours and more.

The IFI have announced it will mark its thirty year anniversary at its Eustace Street premises in Temple Bar with a day of free screenings and activities on September 10.

Coinciding with their annual Open Day, the IFI open its doors to the public every year to showcase the work it does towards film exhibition, preservation and education in Dublin. Film fans can catch free screenings of Jean Luc Godard’s The Image Book, Stanley Kubrick’s A Space Odyssey, the Paul Newman-held classic The Hustler and more. Tickets can be purchased at the IFI box office one hour before each screening begins.

The day will also see a number of tours and activities, including IFI’s Projection Room and the cinema’s adjoining Archive where attendees can ‘Ask the Archivist’ their burning film questions. Tickets can be reserved by phone or by emailing info@irishfilm.ie. But be quick as they are distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis.

IFI Director/ CEO Ross Keane, said today “we are delighted to be marking the 30th anniversary of the IFl’s home in Temple Bar by throwing open our doors to audiences old and new for a day of free films and events. There is no better way to mark this milestone anniversary of the home of film in Ireland than by celebrating and thanking the loyal audiences who have supported us in the past and by inviting in new audiences who will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future.”

Keep an eye on the IFI’s website in the coming weeks for info.
