Blue Spot is Back

Blue Spot is back. This is another whiskey that is constantly on the brink of “sold out” or outright out of stock. Somewhere between increased demand and inconsistent supply, this juice has become notoriously elusive.

It’s a spot on Single Pot Still that delivers all the classic Christmas cake notes you expect with the zing of green apple that unites the spot range.

The 20 year old Maderia cask portion makes this a really special whiskey. While not numbered this is the second bottling of this cask strength expression and comes in at 58.9%, .3% more than the first batch. The bottling date is always found on the back of the bottle engraved into the glass below the label. Always the most reliable way to check which batch your bottle is.

While Mitchell and Son confirmed there are more bottles available this year than last they are expected to sell out well before Christmas even with the 2 bottles per person limit.

Blue Spot is easily a contender for best value cask strength whiskey on the market at the moment. Coming in at €80 this Irish Whiskey Masters Gold Medal Winner is a perfect way to dive into the deep end of high ABV whiskies.

The Spot whiskey range has a cult following which has included Samuel Beckett and Dominic West among its sycophants.

Its reintroduction last year united the whole spot family for the first time in over 100 years.

The spot whiskies themselves got their names from the old practice of marking barrels with spots of paint to easily determine their age. Blue for 7 years, Green for 10, Yellow for 12, and Red for 15.

Official tasting notes:

Nose: A light mix of pineapple, kiwi, green banana and lime zest followed by Pot Still spices, baked apple, hazelnut and toasted wood.

Taste: A smooth mouthfeel with a subtle mix of fruit, a hint of clove oil and cracked black peppercorns. Sweet spices, vanilla and cinnamon add to the wood’s nutty contribution.

Finish: A lasting and distinctly palatable balance of exotic fruits and spices.
