Benedicts Egg Shop is closing at the end of the month

Words: Emily Mullen

The egg-based sandwich shop opened on June 12th 2021 in George’s Street Arcade

Benedicts opened with much anticipation, hype and classy branding during the Halcyon Summer days. The concept takeaway was gold-plated, created by the people who run one of the city’s most successful wine and cheese bars Loose Canon.

Now, the spot is set to close on October 31st, with the team writing “our wee project is coming to a close”.

“We started this project as a little litmus test for the ourselves, getting to watch the city reopen through the beautiful gates of @georgesstreetarcade!”

“We might return in the future but for now we’re wrapping up! Slinging our hooks and moving on with some other exciting projects,” the team added.

Benedicts kept things simple, serving up just one thing with a couple of different toppings. Soft scrambled eggs topped with house sauce and American-style cheese are heaped into a bun, kept as is or topped with either smoked salmon or crispy bacon.

The brainchild of Kevin Powell and Brian O’Keefe, who launched Loose Canon together in 2018. Powell has a background in commercial wine and cheese where he spent several years working in Corleggy Cheese with sheep’s, goat’s and cow’s cheese.

O’Keefe opened Meet Me In The Morning in 2015 with artist and cook Fiona Hallinan. Originally from Dublin, started the cafe after a stint in Paris managing the renowned Coutume Café, founding a natural wine pop-up there.

You can find Benedicts in George’s Street Arcade until October 31, for more information visit their Instagram.
