We are a little bit starved for vegan options in Dublin, but here is a list to see you through the rest of Veganuary, just in case you are running out of ideas.
The notion that vegan food consists of grey, unidentifiable meat-like pucks and rabbit food is long gone. Today, vegan cuisine has reached incredible heights of innovation, meaning you can temper pretty much any craving with perfect satisfaction. From pizza to hangover food, to dessert and everything in between, the vegan food movement is in its golden age. These dishes are not just great vegan options, but great options in general, whether you are opting into the plant based lifestyle or not.
For when you need a big ol’ breakfast
Nothing sets you up right like a good aul brekkie sambo, and you do not have to say goodbye to it just because you are going vegan. This Japanese style sando is packed with smoked vegan bacon, scrambled tofu, vegan Clonakilty pudding, vegan sausage, hash browns, tomato relish, and vegan mayo. It is all snuggled between two thick, fluffy slices of Japanese style shokupan.
For when you need a flavour bomb
If you have not had one of these bad boys, may I ask what in the name of all that is holy are you waiting for? Do not deny yourself this divine pleasure for even one more second. A dosa is a gluten free crispy pancake from South India, made from fermented lentil batter, rice, and fenugreek. It can be served on its own or stuffed with beautiful aromatic fillings like the famous potato masala. It is pure comfort and flavour that you will quickly become addicted to. Gluten free and vegan, with zero compromise on flavour. We love to see it.
For when you need comfort food
Vegan pizzas can often be a bit lacklustre, with spongy bread topped with plasticky fake cheese. Not the case at Coke Lane, which you can find at Lucky’s, The Circular and Priory Market. This is some of the best pizza in town for everyone to enjoy. Whether you are vegan, lactose intolerant, or coeliac, nobody should miss out on the fun of a pizzapalooza. The tomato sauce with courgette, roasted pepper, and moreish mounds of vegan ricotta hits the spot every time. Just do not let your meat and cheese loving friends try it, because they will keep coming back for more.
For when you need a big hungover feed
The Buckfast BBQ Burger is elite hangover food, or just perfect for when you are absolutely ravenous. This masterpiece features Beyond Meat patties smashed with vegan gouda, crispy onion strings, deep fried jalapeños, baby gem lettuce and their famous Buckfast BBQ sauce on a toasted sesame bun. It will satisfy all those fast food cravings in one bite, especially if you pair it with the salt ‘n’ chilli hash browns or the McDaddy fries. Actually, you should definitely get both.
For a winter warming
Pho Kim, one of Dublin’s most beloved Vietnamese restaurants has a dedicated vegetarian and vegan section on the menu, which takes all the guesswork out of dining. A big, steaming bowl of pho is just what the doctor ordered for this chilly weather. It is hearty and delicious. Their vegan broth is served with tender, slurpable noodles and fresh vegetables like carrots, onions, mangetout, and tofu for protein, topped with mint and coriander for a little extra zing.
For when you need a sweet treat
It is not just the best vegan cinnamon roll in Dublin, it is the best cinnamon roll in Dublin full stop. Soft, fluffy, sweet, and bursting with warming cinnamon flavour, this roll is a hug in bun form, and of course it is 100 percent vegan. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face, even in the depths of the gloomiest month of the year.
