Among our many obsessions, there’s one that stands out like a soy sauce stain on a white shirt: sushi. We’re willing to drain our bank accounts and flirt with mercury poisoning to get our fix.
If I had to pick just one food to eat for the rest of my days, it’d be a toss-up between good bread slathered in Kerrygold – or sushi. Nothing else leaves you feeling as weightless as a feather after a meal. Compare it to devouring a hefty carvery – after that (admittedly delicious) carb overload, I need a pillow, my mouth guard, and maybe some half-ass foreplay you gotta promise won’t go anywhere because I’m bolloxed tired. A proper dinner like that makes gravity feel real. No other time do you relate so much to Issac Newton as when you’ve had a good feed. But sushi? It’s like dining on pure helium. It’s like shedding a heavy cloak and floating away into the night. Sure, I feel satisfied, but I also feel like I could moonwalk all the way to the car, two inches above the pavement.
Whether you’re sipping sake, cocktails, wine, or anything else, sushi offers a taste experience that’s as unique as it is delicious. The cold, firm fish mingling with rice, sauce, and assorted fixings creates a vibe that slaps every time.
Here are hands-down the top five best sushi places in our fair city right the hell now.

With a menu bursting with sharing plates, otoshi (lil apps), and customizable options, you’re in control of your dining destiny. While prices may lean towards the medium-to-higher end, the quality of ingredients, creativity, and flair justify every penny. Their lunchtime bento is banging value at €20 for when you want to taste the creativity without going cervix-deep into debt. Making waves on Parliament Street in Dublin 2, Daruma is a breath of fresh air in the city’s food scene. With its authentic Japanese tapas and yakitori-style offerings, it’s a feast and a half. But crucially, it’s sushi is bombastic and yet still traditional. Daruma’s cocktail game is on point, with sake-based tipples that’ll whet your appetite and your whistle.
Perched atop a hairdresser on O’Connell Street, Fujiyama is a sanctuary for sake enthusiasts and sushi lovers alike. It’s actually my personal favourite place to eat sushi in the city and I’ve been going with my brother since our school days. While the exterior may be unassuming, the interior boasts stunning views and unforgettable flavours. The sushi is some of the most well-priced in the city, and it’s a family owned joint, which is always a plus. They give you green tea on arrival and have the kind of menu that would impress even native Japanese people. Every dish is a testament to their attention to detail and impeccable service. So, if you’re looking for an extraordinary dining experience, look no further than Fujiyama. Plus, people watching from above on O’Connell Street is not to be snuffed at – there is always a little drama.
Stepping into Matsukawa on Queen Street, Dublin 7, is like stepping into a sushi sanctuary. Helmed by Chef Takuma Tamaoki, formerly of Galway’s Wa Sushi, this newcomer is already making waves in the sushi scene. With its omakase dining experience, where patrons entrust the chef to serve them directly, Matsukawa offers a taste of tradition and elegance. The price tag may be steep, but true sushi enthusiasts will find it well worth the investment for an unforgettable meal.
