Irish Twitter is sharing their most unfashionable nicknames

Words: Dylan Murphy

“A skinny mate of mine went into the off licence before a school formal and got told he looked like a magic wand.”

In what feels like a silver lining in the burning dumpster fire of the past 18 months, we’ve been blessed with some truly iconic threads on Irish Twitter. You know the kind, where a shower thought gets a few retweets and takes on a life of its own, permeating culture in a way that it’s reaches both your mam’s timeline on Facebook and your own Whatsapp groups. The first one that comes to mind was Dublin rapper Mango’s thread on the funniest nicknames he’d ever heard and more recently we had people celebrating Ireland’s greatest societal achievement – the Luas being free.

Now, we have people coming through with all the times they got rinsed for trying to wear anything remotely outside the norm. Everyone from James Vincent McMorrow to Indie band comedian extraordinaire Michael Fry got involved dropping gems about the most cynical comments they’ve heard for some pretty innocuous offences.

The tweet that kicked it all off.

Here’s the best of them:
