3 Irish independent food companies celebrated on the international stage

Words: Shamim de Brún

Irish food companies Harry’s Nut Butter, White Mausu, and Blasta Books are all featured in The Guardian’s annual “50 things we love in the world of food right now”.

The annual list was back after a covid oriented hiatus in 2021. It is a much-loved serial of Observer Food Monthly. Observer Food Monthly is the monthly supplement of The Observer, which is the weekend name for The Guardian.

Harry’s Nut Butter was written glowingly by Killian Fox and included a shout out to another Fumbally originated success White Mausu. He called Harry’s Nut Butter “a delicious concoction”. He also commented that “Dublin’s small-batch producer scene is in rude health at the moment, and the Fumbally is at the heart of the action.”

Nicola Miller wrote up Blasta Books only two weeks after their first book, Tacos, was published. The small publication company tell compelling Irish food stories. Nigella Lawson even tweeted about how much she enjoyed Tacos by Lily Ramirez-Foran.

Now 17 years old, Observer Food Monthly has become a gastronomic institution that’s always ahead of foodie trends. The magazine writes about everything from the war on plastic to urban farming, chefs’ mental health, and meat’s future.

The Observer Food Monthly’s featuring of small independent Irish businesses is substantial. They have a readership of more than six-hundred and fifty thousand, with over a hundred million monthly viewers. If a fraction of these people buy these Irish products, it could open many doors for the teams behind them.
