Sometimes you deserve a treat but don’t want a sweet.
The world’s population is divided into two halves: Sweet Treat Girlies and Savoury Snack Baddies. Of course, there can be some overlap. Even the most fervent sweet tooth among us gets a salty craving from time to time. Personally, when I go to the bakery, I like to pick up one of each to satisfy both sides of my personality. Sadly, a lot of places have limited salty options. There’s only so many sausage rolls and slices of focaccia I can stomach before I start to feel left out of the laminated bounty of the sweets tray. I long for a little innovation and creativity in my savoury pastry choices, and these spots deliver that in abundance.
Whether you have a taste for sugar or not, these delightful pastries are sure to impress you. And rest assured that they all also have a luscious and extensive line up of sweet goodies too.
We love when someone can take something so simple and elevate it to a new level of heavenliness. This take on a ham and cheese croissant is streets ahead of the floppy, reheated version from the local deli. Although those are good too. It’s a flaky, crispy shell with a gooey, cheesy and salty hammy marriage within.
The darling of Greystones was sure to make an appearance on this list. Their sweet treats are stuff of legend, but they know their way around a savoury palate too. The everything croissant is the top of the savoury totem pole here in my book, but since we already have an everything-inspired pastry on the list, let’s give it up for the classic Nduja Bun. Honestly, these are the most iconic treats on the Scéal menu anyway, so they deserve the shout-out. They’re buttery, bready buns that bring out the sweetness of the nduja, which works really beautifully with the mild nuttiness from the ricotta salata topping.
You can get it at the Greystones shop and their weekend pop-up at the Wine Pier on Clanbrassil in Dublin 8.
Not only are these visually divine, but they are a gorgeous symphony of all the best bits of an everything bagel, but in a delicious bun form. Spring onion butter, everything seasoning, whipped cream cheese, and topped with a few slivers of pickled onion. The perfect level of acidic bite to cut through that creaminess.
This one inspired the whole list. An absolute delight, the perfect balance of creamy fattiness from the feta and a little acidic zing and sweetness from the sundried tomato, tied together with lovely herbaceous pesto and encased in a flaky, buttery shell. A perfectly sized snack for when you just need a little something to keep you going.
What a work of art. Elliot’s leads the game with its varied and creative selection of savoury offerings. The Hot Pep Danish and fully loaded pies (YES, PIES!) are absolutely delicious, but this Kanturk Pastrami, Kraut and Gochujang Pain Suisse is an utter showstopper. The lamination is otherworldly, and with the innovative combo of pastrami, gochujang, and sour kraut, it is nothing short of bold and exciting.
