Uber Eats now sells weed in Canada

Now you can order more than your typical leafy greens.

The food-delivery service is pairing up with weed retailer Tokyo Smoke to allow people in Ontario to order weed for pickup.

On Monday, Uber Canada announced it’s partnership with the cannabis retail chain to allow customers in Canada’s largest province to order weed off the Uber Eats app. However, Uber Eats won’t be delivering the weed.

Due to Ontario’s cannabis stores being privately owned, they are currently not allowed to deliver weed. Only the government-run online shop, Ontario Cannabis Store, can deliver marijuana to people’s homes.

The Canadian province previously relaxed the rules around weed retailers during the early days of the pandemic, allowing for curb side pick-ups and home delivery. These changes have since ended but new legislation under review by the government may allow for home delivery by all retailers in the near future.

Uber has emphasised the benefits of their collaboration, explaining that the Uber Eats/Tokyo Smoke project will “help combat the underground illegal market,” which makes up more than 40 percent of adult-use cannabis sales in Canada.

Uber also referenced the pending legislation, noting that allowing marijuana to be delivered to people’s homes could reduce cases of impaired driving.

Unregulated weed delivery services have been widely available in Canada for years. Cannabis was legalised in Canada in 2018, making it the first G7 and G20 nation to do so. Germany appears to be following in their footsteps after the announcement that a deal to legalise marijuana had been made this week.

Canada’s marijuana market is worth around €3.5 billion per year.
