Dublin City Council awarded international culture award

Words: Ellen Kenny

The World Organisation of United Cities and Local Governments awarded Dublin City Council and Dublin Culture Company the Global Award for cultural engagement last Monday.

The award recognises a region or individual that has created innovative cultural or creative opportunities for its citizens.

This year, the awards also gave special consideration to any cultural initiatives taken during the pandemic.

Dublin City won the cultural award thanks to its Accessibility, Wellbeing and Evidence programme (AWE). This programme aims to connect people with culture in their city.

Through this initiative, the Dublin Cultural Company runs programmes in neighbourhoods and spaces in the city that contribute to cultural engagement of those who live there.

The Culture Company showed true creative innovation and dedication during the pandemic. Many programmes were moved online during the pandemic and participants received digital training and support.

On the award, Lord Mayor Allison Gilliland praised the Culture Company: “The innovative approach of the Culture Company makes culture more accessible to everyone in our city.”

“Through continuous collaboration with local people in their local areas, we are able to deliver the cultural themes and ambitions expressed by our citizens.”
