All workers to qualify for sick pay for the first time under new laws

Words: Eva O’Beirne

Workers will be entitled to 70 per cent of their wages, up to 110 euro a day, for three days when the legislation is brought into law in September.

Employees must get a medical certificate to avail of the sick pay and have worked for their employer for a minimum of thirteen weeks to qualify.

The guaranteed number of paid sick days will increase to five days paid leave in 2024, seven days in 2025, and ten days in 2026.

However, the amount workers are entitled to has come under fire as the daily earnings threshold of 110 euro in the scheme is based on 2019 average weekly earnings of 786.33 euro and hasn’t been adjusted for the current cost of living.
