A New Oyster & Guinness Festival is Happening in Dublin This Weekend

We love a good oyster festival, especially one with a funny name.

We’re so lucky here in Ireland to have such divine beer and seafood, so it only makes sense to celebrate them both at a dedicated festival.

This weekend, from Friday, February 28th to Sunday, March 2nd, All Shucked Up Howth will take place at various spots around Howth Village.

There’s loads of events going on. You can watch the best shuckers on the island compete in a National Oyster Shucking Competition at The Abbey Tavern on Saturday at 2pm. Admission is free to watch.

There’ll also be an oyster shucking masterclass on Sunday with Sarah Browne of Oysome, so you can learn how to do it yourself. Who knows? With a bit of practice, maybe you’ll be shucking with the best of them at the competition next year.

There’s a Fisherman’s Folklore Coastal Foraging Tour on Saturday with Nicole from Howth Foraging where you can learn how to identify coastal plants.

There will be roaming shuckers in the village selling fresh oysters. The local restaurants and bars will be rolling out their best oysters and taking part in a best-dressed oyster competition. And it’s as much about the music as it is about the oysters with loads of live gigs and DJs playing around the village over the weekend including over 20 free shows across 7 venues.

Shucking Hell

The Shucking Masterclass with Sarah Browne of Oysome will take place on Sunday at Findlaters (Sky Bar) at 1pm. For those of us who are a little intimidated by the shucking process, Sarah will help ease the nerves and show us how it’s done, as well as how to taste oysters the right way for the best experience. She’ll teach you how to make the basic accompaniments to bring out the flavours of your oyster without overpowering them. Tickets cost €45 and include a tasting pack with a knife and apron, so you can practise at home.

Fun with Foraging

On the Fisherman’s Folk Coastal Foraging Tour, guide Nicole will bring a group on a fascinating journey where you can learn how to identify coastal plants and how to use them in cooking and for medicinal purposes. Could be handy for whenever you need a quick snack on the beach. Tickets are €10 and booking is essential.
