Breadman Walking has announced that they will make their final bake on 14th September.
For once, this is a closure not due to VAT, soaring energy costs, or the rising price of ingredients. No, this time, it comes down to an unexpected intervention by Dublin City Council. Responding to a complaint, DCC has deemed the home bakery in breach of planning regulations. Faced with the prospect of fines up to €5,000 or even a stint behind bars, the ‘Breadman’ Gerry Godley made the difficult decision to shut up shop.
There’s no bitterness on Gerry’s part, though. In a heartfelt statement on Instagram, he expressed his understanding of the situation, saying, “Planning enforcement officials have a difficult job to do, and have been thorough and fair in their dealings with us.” He also mentioned that they did not knowingly break any rules, but this situation does raise important questions—perhaps for another time—about whether our current planning laws are fit for purpose. These laws need to adequately accommodate the growing trend of small, home-based businesses that contribute positively to our communities.
While it’s terribly sad news, Gerry is staying positive, celebrating the euphoric ride he’s had and remaining optimistic about the future and the next evolution of Breadman Walking. He sees lots of possibilities on the horizon and is open to collaboration and fresh ideas. Plus, he’s still running his popular sourdough classes, so there’s still a chance to learn how to bake bread from the master himself.
The next phase of Breadman Walking might just be around the corner. Until then, let’s savour these final bakes and celebrate the incredible journey that Breadman Walking has taken us on.
